The Story

Named after the Italian word for ‘scoundrel’, Mascalzone is a family-run Sardinian restaurant in Sandyford that has earned near-legendary status among Newcastle food lovers. The menu is rooted in authentic regional Italian cooking — from pizza made with Napoletana flour, San Marzano tomatoes, and fior di latte mozzarella, to Sardinian specialities like seafood fregola and the show-stopping calzone mascalzone.

What To Order

The outdoor patio is the place to be on a warm evening, ideally with an Aperol Spritz and a selection of the small plates. Mascalzone changes its specials regularly, which keeps regulars coming back — but the classic dishes remain a constant draw. If you’re looking for one Italian restaurant in Newcastle that locals genuinely swear by, this is it.
