The Story

Named after the city at the heart of Sri Lanka’s Tamil north, Jaffna House is one of the anchor restaurants of Tooting’s Sri Lankan strip – a big, cafe-style dining room with a menu that runs from rice and curry to a long list of “short eats”, the savoury snacks Sri Lankan cafes are built around. It’s one of the more established names on the High Street, and its size means it copes well with the weekend crowds the strip pulls in.

What To Order

String hoppers – steamed rice-flour noodle nests eaten with coconut sambol and a curry of your choice – are the dish most first-timers are steered towards, alongside mutton rolls and a devilled prawn dish that turns up on most tables. The vegetarian menu is extensive even by the strip’s high standard, making it a reliable choice for mixed groups.

Good To Know

With well over a thousand reviews and a 4.5-star average, it’s consistently one of the strongest performers on the High Street. It’s set up for quick, casual dining rather than a long lingering meal, with a takeaway counter running alongside the sit-down room for anyone who’d rather eat at home.
